Quick History Of Onions
Did you know that Onion has been used as food for thousands of years? That in ancient Greece, athletes ate large quantities of onion because it was believed that it would lighten the balance of blood?
That Roman gladiators were rubbed down with onions to firm up their muscles?
Did you know that in the middle ages onions were such an important food that people would pay their rent with onions, and even give them as gifts? Did you know that the onion was introduce to North America by Christopher Columbus? Did you know that onions were also prescribed by doctors in the early 1500s to help with infertility in women? Did you know that doctors were known to prescribe onions to facilitate bowl movements, to relieve headaches, coughs, snake bite and hair loss?
While wide range of claims have been made for the effectiveness of onions against conditions ranging from the common cold to heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and other diseases it has not been proven that increased consumption of onions is directly linked to health benefit. However, Some studies have shown that increased consumption of onions reduces head and neck cancers. The chemical compounds in onions is believed to have anti- inflammatory, anticancer, anti-cholesterol, and antioxidant properties. More Onion research should take place.
