Southern Fried Spicy Chicken

Southern Fried Spicy Chicken Recipe - Love Southern Cooking, then spice it and make it spicy!  If you love hot food, then this is the recipe for you.  Its truly not difficult to make and its a great combination of flavors.  Southern cooking at its best.


1) Cut up a whole chicken into seperate segments, or purchase pre cut chicken pieces.

2) Place the chicken in a deep baking dish, and sprinkle both sides with salt and black pepper.

3) In a mixing bowl, add the hot pepper sauce, buttermilk, cayenne pepper and whisk together.

4) Pour the mixture ontop of the chicken, cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours. 

5) In a ziploc plastic bag, add the flour with 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and season with salt and black pepper.  Toss around to mix together.

6) Place several pieces of the chicken into the plastic wrap and cover with the flour mixture.

7) In a deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil, then gently place each chicken piece to the hot oil and fry until the chicken turn golden brown and cooks through.  Fry for 10 to 15 minutes turning as needed.

8) Drain the cooked chicken onto a kitchen paper towel. (this will absorb some excess oil)

*NOTE - It is best to not over crowd the fryer, and to fry in batches.

  1. 1 (3 pound) whole chicken, cut into pieces

  3. 1 quart buttermilk
  4. 2 tablespoons hot pepper sauce
  5. 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  6. 3 cups all-purpose flour
  7. 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
  8. 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  9. 1 teaspoon paprika
  10. salt and ground black pepper to taste
  11. vegetable oil for deep frying
